 In the early 1980s, Lee Doo-Hak, imprisoned in Gwangju Prison, receives a visitor and reflects on his past in the late 1970s.

Cheol-Woong, the grandson of a deceased independence activist in Yeosu, Jeolla-do, and Doo-Hak, the son of Lee Chung-Ho, who worked as a farmhand under Cheol-Woong's grandfather, are best friends despite a one-year age difference. When Cheol-Woong gets into a fight with a senior on the bus. Doo-Hak, who is willing to fight on behalf of Cheol-Woong, quickly subdues the opponent.

After placing first and second in school, Cheol-Woong and Doo-Hak decide to watch a movie at a theater, where they run into Oh Jung-Shin, the daughter of the theater owner. At first, the trio have some struggles and twists and turns, and comes out after watching the movie 'safely', only to run into the senior student and his gang on the bus. Doo-Hak and Cheol-Woong run away, with Jung-Shin unwillingly following.
 

After safely escaping from the gang, Du-Hak and Cheol-Woong fall in love with Jung-Shin at the same time. The two friends become rivals for her affections and decide to confess their feelings to her at her school, but she tells them she needs time to decide and suggests they become friends in the meantime.
