The drama's plot is simple. The Dutton family, a group of German immigrants, and a herd of cattle as their emergency food and farming source. Two Pinkerton Agency agents and other cowboys guide them and their herd safely to their destination, 2000 miles from Fort Worth, Texas to Oregon. The series follows their wagon journey, encountering natural disasters, bandits, enemies within, indigenous groups hostile to them, and themselves. All the obstacles they face are like setbacks we encounter in life.
1883 takes the form of a road movie, where incidents and conflicts occur on the road, ultimately leading the characters to realize the true meaning of life at the end. In particular, 17-year-old Elsa's emotional journey leaves a strong impact.
