| Sweet Magnolias Review: A Heartwarming Romantic Drama Like Gilmore Girls and Parenthood on Netflix |
The drama Sweet Magnolias, which begins with Maddie(JoAnna Garcia Swisher) leaving her husband in the middle of a mediation session and mainly deals with Sweet Magnolias trio's romance, work, and family problems, particularly as mothers of teenage children.
Set in the small town of Serenity in South Carolina, the romantic drama reminds me of Gilmore Girls at first glance. A chef friend Dana Sue Sullivan(Brooke Elliott) and a lawyer friend Helen Decatur(Heather Headley) appear, adding more depth to the story.
What sets Sweet Magnolias apart from Gilmore Girls is that the main character of Maddie, who is more subdued and sweet compared to the energetic Lorelai of Gilmore Girls. Despite her calm demeanor, Maddie has a strong presence in the show.
The various episodes involving her teenage children are reminiscent of Parenthood. Mainly, Maddie's two conflicting sons Ty(Carson Rowland) and Kyle(Logan Allen), and Dana Sue's daughter Annie(Anneliese Judge) are quite involved in teenage rebellion, adding an element of fun and drama to the series. The show also introduces other intriguing female characters like Sissy Mattney(Harlan Drum)and newcomer Nellie Lewis(Simon Lockhart).
The romantic charm of Sweet Magnolias, based on the original romance novel, revolves around Maddie's love affair with Carl Maddox (Justin Bruning), the school baseball coach, but the other two are no exception in experiencing love and its challenges. It is expected to be in full swing in season 2.
Netflix's Sweet Magnolia maintains a generally calm tone, dealing with trivial daily troubles and overcoming them. Each episode has one valuable line, which is one of the virtues that this kind of drama can give, which makes you reflect on small daily life.
